  • WELCOME!

This is a special place, the kind you remember, but can never find. By the Way Bakery is an old-fashioned bakery where everything is made by hand, from scratch, in small batches. And, by the way, all of our baked goods are gluten-free and dairy-free. They're also certified kosher. Most important, everything we make is as delicious as – if not better than – most conventional baked goods.

Blueberry muffins bursting with blueberries. A lemon layer cake made with fresh lemon zest and filled with homemade lemon curd. A chocolate chip cookie made with the finest Belgian chocolate. A smile you can taste.

Come visit us to find out why so many people have fallen in love with our bite-size little shops!

    • THOUGHTS ON MOTHER'S DAY

      broken image

This photo was taken years ago by my dear friend Audrey Bernstein. Audrey and her husband Jon arrived at our house for brunch on a Sunday morning in the summer of 2001 at about the same time that I arrived home from the gym. (Timing is not my strong suit.) Before I could run upstairs to take a quick shower and change, Audrey took out her camera and began taking pictures, presenting me with the print a week or so later.

Alex and Mo are grown men now, but Alex still has an impish grin, Mo still loves to laugh, and nothing makes me happier than being with my sons. I look for any and every reason to get together with them. And I count my blessings every day.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14th, but no one should dictate why, when, or with whom we celebrate. That’s why all of the items on our Mother’s Day menu will be available for the entire month of May. I hope it inspires you to let someone know that they made a difference in your life. Because everyone appreciates a little extra sweetness now and then.

        Warmly,

        Helene

      • KOSHER

        CERTIFIED

EVERYTHING WE BAKE IS KOSHER PAREVE

OK Kosher Certification supervises all baking at the By the Way Bakery commissary kitchen in Pleasantville, New York. The By the Way Bakery commissary produces all of the baked goods sold in all By the Way Bakery retail shops.

OK Kosher does not supervise our retail locations. Instead, local Rabbis make periodic site inspections of our stores, on weekdays and Shabbat, to ensure that the only baked goods sold in the stores are the ones baked in the commissary. Learn more about these inspections here.

You can also purchase items in our shops that are in sealed packaging bearing the OK Kosher symbol. In addition, you can order in advance and request that any item on the By the Way Bakery menu arrives at the shop in sealed packaging bearing the OK symbol. These pre-packaged items are the only items sold in our stores that are certified by OK Kosher.

Questions? Please send an email to kosher@btwbakery.com or call our commissary at (914) 741-1956.

      • FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What ingredients do you use instead of wheat and dairy? We make our own gluten-free flour mix and use various dairy alternatives, depending on the product. Please see the BTW Ingredient Summary for a list of our ingredients and which of the nine allergens, if any, are in each of our products. If you have additional questions or concerns, please send an email to ingredients@btwbakery.com.

Are all of your products gluten-free? Yes. Our kitchen is a dedicated gluten-free facility. We carefully vet every ingredient and test our products on a regular basis. Our products are recommended by the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.

Are all of your products dairy-free? Yes. There’s milk for the coffee, but you won’t find any dairy products in the BTW kitchen. In fact, our baked goods are certified kosher pareve.

Are your products kosher? Yes. Everything we bake is kosher pareve.

Questions? Please send an email to kosher@btwbakery.com or call our commissary at (914) 741-1956.

Are your products kosher for Passover? Our baked goods are always wheat-free, dairy-free, and kosher pareve. All of the items on our Passover menu are consistent with the Sephardic tradition of using kitnyot (rice and corn) during Passover. However, our baked goods are NOT kosher for Passover because our ingredients, while certified kosher, are not certified "Kosher for Passover".

Are you a nut-free bakery? No. Some but not all of our recipes include tree nuts. While we do have products that do not contain tree nuts, there is always a risk of cross-contamination. Among the tree nuts found in our kitchen are pecans, walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts. In addition, many of our products contain coconut. Please review our Ingredient Summary before placing your order.

Are any of your products vegan? No, because we use eggs and conventional sugar. (Eggs may be sold next to the milk, but they're not considered dairy by the USDA.) After years of trying, we've yet to come up with a vegan option that meets our standards.

Do you make custom layer cakes? We LOVE making custom cakes, especially wedding cakes! Please take a look at the photo gallery and our Cake Book to see just a few of the custom cakes we’ve made, then give us a call so we can design a special cake just for you. Please note that many custom cake designs require a minimum of three days' notice. However, we offer a selection of personalized cakes that can be ordered up to 48 hours in advance. See our 48-hour Layer Cake Guide for the available options. And no worries! Each of our four stores receives a variety of 6" layer cakes each morning.

Can you accommodate large orders? Yes! Please send an email to custom@btwbakery.com to discuss catering options.

Do you deliver? Caviar, DoorDash, GrubHub, and Uber Eats offer same-day delivery of any item that we have in-store at the time of the order. Sorry, delivery for custom orders is not available via these third-party platforms.

Do you ship? We do not ship our baked goods. However, our store staff is always happy to help you select the items that will ship best if you want to do the packing and shipping yourself.

What is your refund policy? Because of the amount of time spent on custom orders, there are no refunds for any custom orders canceled within 48 hours of the pickup or delivery date. All other refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Additional questions or concerns? Please send an email to custom@btwbakery.com and someone on our team will get back to you promptly.

      • STAY SAFE!

        "Best bakery EVER!"

We care about the health of our customers and their families, as well as our staff.

We are actively following the guidelines and directives from the CDC, the NYC Department of Health, and other reliable sources.

The COVID-19 virus is spread through contact with other people, not through the preparation of food.

At all of our stores and our baking facility, we have taken additional steps to heighten protocol on all of our sanitation efforts. As always, we are thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing surfaces in our shop throughout the day, with added frequency given the current situation.

We are also providing resources to help our team stay informed and supported, and to ensure no one comes to work who is feeling under the weather or unsafe.

Lastly, we are making some temporary changes, including the end of sampling for now, to help guests stay safe and healthy. The most important things you can do are wear a mask, respect social distancing, and thoroughly wash your hands after any contact with the outside world.

We'll continue to uphold cleanliness standards with extra diligence, doing everything we can to make your life a little sweeter during these difficult times.

        Sincerely,

        Helene
